Department Responsibilities

The Department of the City Secretary has specific duties in its fulfillment of city needs. It is responsible for:
  • Administer the City Records Management Program
  • Collect Fees and Issue Permits for:
    • Beer and Wine Permits
    • Collect Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax

  • Coordinating City Commission Meetings
    • Electronic Agenda Preparation and Posting
    • Preparation and Maintenance of Agendas / Minutes
    • Respond to Public Information Requests
    • Maintain Official City Records
  • Maintain City Boards and Commissions Records
  • Provide Public Information to the Citizens of Brownsville
  • Serve as Local Registrar for the City of Brownsville by filing and providing:
    • Acknowledgement of Paternity
    • Grant Burial Transit Permits
    • Issue City Cemetery Burial Permits
    • Issue Birth and Death Records

    The Office of the City Secretary received the State's 5-Star "Exemplary" Award in December 2014. This is one of only four awarded to the RGV Local Registrars and the ninth annual award for the Local Registrar's Office in Brownsville
